# How Much RAM Do You Need for a Minecraft Server?

Is 4 GB, 8 GB, or 16 GB enough for your Minecraft server? Most small vanilla servers run fine on **2–4 GB**. Plugin servers (Paper or Spigot) for a community want **6–8 GB**. Modpacks need **4–16 GB** depending on size, with kitchen-sink packs like All The Mods 10 at the top end. Bedrock needs about **1–2 GB** for a small group.

Start at the recommended number for your setup, watch your panel's memory graph, and add RAM only if usage sits near the limit.

## How much RAM does a Minecraft server need?

It comes down to three things: your **server type**, your **player count**, and how many **mods or plugins** you run. There is no single number, but there are reliable starting points.

- **Vanilla** for friends: 2–4 GB
- **Paper or Spigot** for a community: 6–8 GB
- **Modpacks**: 4–16 GB depending on size
- **Bedrock**: about 1–2 GB for a small group

> **Tip:** Treat every number here as a starting point. The right amount is what your server actually uses under load plus a buffer, so check your panel's memory graph after a real play session.

## How much RAM for a vanilla or Paper server?

These figures are **minimum → recommended** for Java Edition. Go with the recommended number if you can, and the minimum only if you are keeping costs down and watching your memory graph.

| Setup | Mods / plugins | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vanilla, 1–5 players | None | 2 GB | 4 GB |
| Vanilla, 6–20 players | None | 4 GB | 6 GB |
| Vanilla, 20+ players | None | 6 GB | 8–10 GB |
| Paper, up to 10 players | A handful of plugins | 3 GB | 4–6 GB |
| Paper, 10–30 players | 10–30 plugins | 6 GB | 8 GB |
| Paper, 30+ players | Many or heavy plugins | 8 GB | 10 GB+ |

Plugins add up. Map plugins, large claim systems, and world generation plugins are the usual RAM hogs. PaperMC's own documentation recommends [6–10 GB when using Aikar's flags](https://docs.papermc.io/paper/aikars-flags), which is the high end of what most hosts suggest for small groups.

> **Tip:** Lowering **view distance** often frees up more performance than adding RAM. See our [Paper and Spigot optimization guide](/minecraft/optimizing-paper-spigot-minecraft).

## How much RAM does a modded Minecraft server need?

Modpack servers vary the most, because what the mods do matters more than how many there are. **World generation mods**, big **tech and automation** mods, and lots of **chunk loading** all push memory up, and so does a higher player count.

Use the pack author's recommendation if there is one, then size to these starting points. Installing through our one-click modpack installer? Check the pack's own page first.

| Pack size | Loader | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light, under ~50 mods | Forge / NeoForge / Fabric | 4 GB | 6 GB |
| Medium, 50–150 mods | Forge / NeoForge / Fabric | 6 GB | 8–10 GB |
| Large, 150+ mods | Kitchen-sink packs | 10 GB | 12–16 GB |

> **Tip:** Kitchen-sink packs like **All The Mods 10** sit at the top. There is no official RAM table, and hosting guides mostly land on **10–12 GB** for a small group and **about 16 GB** for five or more players. Our [modded optimization guide](/minecraft/optimizing-modded-minecraft) covers JVM flags and pre-generation to keep a big pack stable.

## How much RAM does a Bedrock server need?

Bedrock servers are lighter. The official Bedrock Dedicated Server is native software, not a Java program, so there is no heap to tune and no `-Xmx` setting. Hosting guides commonly suggest **1 GB** for 1–5 players and **2 GB** for 6–10, then adding more as your player count and world grow.

## Does more RAM make a Minecraft server faster?

Not past the point where the server has what it needs. [PaperMC's docs](https://docs.papermc.io/paper/aikars-flags) note that performance stops improving beyond a certain amount of memory. A heap far larger than you need can even make **garbage collection pauses** longer, which shows up as stutters.

If your **TPS** is low while memory sits well under the limit, RAM is not the bottleneck. Minecraft runs on a single main thread, so CPU speed, entity counts, and chunk loading usually matter more. Use Spark to find what is costing tick time, as covered in our [TPS and lag guide](/basic-help/understanding-tps-and-lag).

## How do I know if my server needs more RAM?

Signs of **too little**:

- `java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space` in the console or a crash report
- A memory graph pinned at your limit
- Regular lag spikes every few seconds or minutes
- The server being killed and restarting on its own

Signs of **too much**: memory use that plateaus far below your allocation, even at peak player count. If the graph never gets close to the limit, you are paying for RAM you are not using.

## How much of my RAM should I give Java (-Xmx and -Xms)?

`-Xmx` is the **maximum** heap Java may use, and `-Xms` is the **starting** heap. Java also uses memory outside the heap, so never set `-Xmx` to your plan's full amount. PaperMC advises keeping about **1–1.5 GB** below your total, for example a **6.5 GB** heap on an **8 GB** plan.

If you set these yourself in your panel's JVM arguments field, use the same value for both and pair them with [Aikar's flags](/minecraft/optimizing-paper-spigot-minecraft).

JVM arguments for an 8 GB plan:

```text
-Xms6500M -Xmx6500M
```

## How do I add more RAM to my Vaelix server?

Open a ticket in the [Vaelix store](https://store.vaelix.cloud/client/tickets) and our team will help you upgrade. Not sure how much you need? Start at the recommended number for your setup above and check your memory graph after a real session.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is 4GB RAM enough for a Minecraft server?

For a vanilla server with a handful of friends, yes. A Paper server for 10 or more players, or any modpack beyond a light one, will want more. See the tables above for your setup.

### Is 8GB RAM too much for a Minecraft server?

For a small vanilla server it is more than you need, and extra RAM past that point does not make the game faster. For a medium modpack or a plugin server with 10 to 30 players, 8 GB is about right.

### How much RAM do I need for 10 players?

About 4 to 6 GB for vanilla, 4 to 6 GB for Paper with a few plugins, and 8 GB or more for most modpacks.

### How much RAM do I need for a modded Minecraft server?

Roughly 4 to 6 GB for a light pack, 8 to 10 GB for a medium pack, and 12 to 16 GB for kitchen-sink packs like All The Mods 10. Check the pack author's recommendation first.

### Does Minecraft Bedrock need less RAM than Java?

Yes. The Bedrock Dedicated Server is native software rather than a Java program, and hosting guides commonly suggest about 1 GB for 1 to 5 players and 2 GB for 6 to 10.
